Reading Groups

Some of you may be wondering: "what does my child do during their reading group?" We do a range of activities to build our knowledge of letter names, sounds, sight word recognition, and reading simple decodable books. We use letter tiles, picture cards, white boards, and you may have heard about our reading fingers- if not ask your child :)

This week's book is thematic- Five Little Pumpkins. Reid and Chloe take a picture walk of their books. The first time we read a book, we preview the pictures to familiarize ourselves with the book and it helps our ability to read and figure our the words.

Luke and Rylan take a look at their book.

We also work on our sight words in reading group. When students have mastered a word, they get a sticker! I can tell many of you are practicing at home! The kids come in the door in the morning begging to read the words to me!

Naturalist

We had our first naturalist lesson this morning with Mrs. Uebel (aka Ben's mom).

We started our lesson with a story called, "The Shape of Betts Meadow." See if your child can tell you about it.

We got to see an areal photo of our school and our wetlands just like we saw in the story!

Brynne was hard at work drawing her very own restored habitat.

Audrey was filling in her naturalist journal with today's weather.

We got to go explore the wetlands (which are very dry right now!). Ask your child what they saw!

Science

Our science unit is 2x2 animals. We have looked at snails, 2 kinds of worms, and pill bugs and sow bugs. See if your child remembers the difference between pill and sow bugs!

Aarion liked playing with the pill bugs.

Emmanuel had fun with the worms!

Silly Audrey!

Asher was so brave and held many worms!

The worms were so long! Michael had to join the fun.

David had about 10 pill bugs crawling in his hand!

The pill bug tickled Nicholas's finger.

Those dots are pill bugs, and these boys loved them!

Alana got brave and finally held the worms!

Who knew worms were so entertaining?!

Math Journals

We have been working on our math journals everyday. We read the journal prompt, talk about what the problem asking, and then they go work. Today our prompt went with our shape unit. They had to draw a square above a spider.

Kaden shows off his work.

Brynne is proud!

Ben the mathematician finished his work!

Writers Workshop

We are continuing to become writers every day! I cannot express how impressed I was with our class today during writers workshop. Almost every child drew a picture and then labeled the parts of their picture. We focused today on sounding out the words we want to spell and writing a letter for all of the sounds we hear. If that means that a student writes the letter 'c' for the word cape, I am thrilled! They are learning to become independent spellers.

Noah was in the first stages of his writing. Drawing a picture helps get all of his ideas on paper.

Nicholas was working hard on his drawing.

Alana is hard at work drawing a picture with lots of details.

Aarion loves to write! He fills his pages with lots of letters and words!

Luke labeled the colors 'blue' and 'red' and knew how to spell them! Our hard work during our color weeks has paid off!

Shapes

We have started learning about shapes. We will be learning about squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons. We sorted buttons into 2 groups: shapes with curves and shapes with straight sides.

Morgan was so proud of her sorting!

Reid sorted his shapes into curved and straight shapes.
