Eric Carle

This week we are doing an author study of Eric Carle. All of his books are wonderful and we are focusing on how he creates his books. We learned that he uses collage in most of his books! We are going to practice this style of art and be artists just like Eric Carle on Thursday! 

Today we read, The Tiny Seed. He worked on details while reading this story. We did a comprehension page afterward to show which things were helpful to the seed and which things hurt the seed. 

Addition

We are diving deeper into addition with our new math unit. We are working on breaking apart numbers and translating that into equations. We even had to put our equations backwards today to show that we really understand what it means. 

 

Gak, Oobleck, and Snow...Oh My!

We carried our chemistry over to today! We made two kinds of gak and Oobleck. Oobleck is made with corn starch and water, and gak is glue, water, and borax. One cool thing about Oobleck is that is acts like a solid and a liquid. When you put force against it, it acts like a solid, and then it acts like a liquid and melts. 

We made a Feozen gak in front of the class today also! We added food coloring and glitter to ten gak and it turned out so pretty!

Snow!

Chemistry

We learned that chemistry is when we take different products and put them together to make something new. Ms. Loggins did this to make the play dough last night. She mixed flour, salt, cream of tarter, water and oil to make play dough. This is chemistry! We got the chance to make snow this morning, and we were chemists! We mixed two boxes of corn starch and a can of shaving cream together and it made a super fun snow! 

This morning we worked in groups and observed the snow and each play dough: cinnamon, Galaxy (dark blue with sparkles), and white. We used our sense of sight to see what each looked like, our sense of smell to see what each felt like, and our sense of touch to see what each felt like.

After observing, we wrote down our observations like scientists. We wrote about what our favorite thing was from today!

Fancy Dress Up Day

We had fancy dress up day to celebrate filling our coin jar! We earn coins when we are following our school and classroom rules. Our class voted and they chose a dress up day. We looked great!

We love to be silly!

Reading

We have been practicing reading and fixing up sentences. We know that every sentence starts with a capital letter, has finger spaces in between each word, and punctuation at the end. 

We are also practicing reading and spelling our sight words!

Math: Place Value

We have begun to really dive into place value. We are using ten sticks and ones. We got to explore these and will use them to build numbers next week!

Which play dough is the best?

Yesterday we investigated play dough. We played with store bought playdoh and with a play dough that I made. We had to figure out what each felt like, looked like, smelled like, and if we could make a snake and a ball.
