Naturalist

What a great day in our naturalist lesson! The kids had so much fun learning about soil. We started our lesson in the modular. We got to see a model of the layers of soil and got to go on a scavenger hunt for things that are in our soil. We then got to see and touch different soil types. Finally we went out to the wetlands where Mr. Canning and Mrs. Uebel dug soil cores. We got to observe and feel the soil from our wetlands!

How cool is this model?!

Brooks and Aarion take a look at what is under our feet in the soil.

Yes! Toilet water has to go somewhere! We all got to flush the little toilet.

Brooks is trying to determine where the soil is from based on the color.

Students as teacher

Today we practiced our sight words as a whole group. I decided to give some of our students the opportunity to be the teacher and point to the words with the pointer!

Reid was an awesome teacher and tried to trick us by going out of order (one of my favorite techniques) but we were so smart and read them correctly!

Rylan got to try next! He was great!

Proud boys!

During literacy stations this morning, Luke, Nicholas, David, Brooks, and Darach worked so hard on this ABC puzzle and they got it finished! Way to go!

Movie and popcorn day!

Crunch, crunch, crunch...the lovely sounds I got to hear this afternoon as we ate popcorn and watched a Magic School Bus movie about bees! Your kids were so grateful and thankful to have watched a movie (which is funny because they picked it!). Afterwards, I heard, "that was the best movie ever," and, "thank you so much for letting us watch the movie!" They are so cute!

Some enjoyed the movie and popcorn from the comfort of a chair while other preferred to sit on the floor.

Ultra focused on the movie! Ask your child what they learned about bees and honey!

Nothing could distract David, Kaden, Thea, Ben, or Darach from missing even a second of the movie.

Some got super comfy and chose to lay down.

Sometimes you just have to dance

We had a rainy day recess this afternoon and we are felt the need to dance! Check out some of our dance moves!

Emmanuel has some jumpy dance moves.

Reid, Chloe, Brynne, and Michael are all happy to dance!

Look at those moves from Michael!

Bust a move, Aarion!

Because I'm happy!

The kids love dancing to our gonoodle video...especially if it is this minion one :)

We are artists!

We had a busy day being artists this afternoon! We made rip art pumpkins and hand print bats!

This was the best part! Sticking their hands in a blob of paint and rubbing it on their hands!

Next step was to make the bat!

While I pulled kids to do the bats, everyone else worked hard on their rip pumpkins. Masterpieces in the making by Aarion, Michael and Rylan. Brooks was working on a color by letter because he finished early.

Thea works on her last step: writing her name in white crayon.

Hannah and Brynne are hard at work.

The masterpieces are complete! I LOVE this bulletin board!

Reading Groups

Some of you may be wondering: "what does my child do during their reading group?" We do a range of activities to build our knowledge of letter names, sounds, sight word recognition, and reading simple decodable books. We use letter tiles, picture cards, white boards, and you may have heard about our reading fingers- if not ask your child :)

This week's book is thematic- Five Little Pumpkins. Reid and Chloe take a picture walk of their books. The first time we read a book, we preview the pictures to familiarize ourselves with the book and it helps our ability to read and figure our the words.

Luke and Rylan take a look at their book.

We also work on our sight words in reading group. When students have mastered a word, they get a sticker! I can tell many of you are practicing at home! The kids come in the door in the morning begging to read the words to me!
