Fun in the Sun

With the beautiful weather we had yesterday we went outside and spent time drawing with chalk, running (or laying) in the grass, and reading outside! Coming back inside to go home, a student said, "this was the best day of my life!" It's amazing what a little sunshine can do to make everyone super happy!

Eric Carle Bulletin Board

Our masterpieces are up! Look how wonderfully they all turned out!

Gardening with Mr. Canning!

Yesterday we got to go to the garden and plant marigolds and nasturtiums with Mr. Canning. While a few kids planted, the rest of the class got to go and observe all of the other cool things in our garden!

We started in our classroom by talking about "propagation" which is how we get new plants.
Mr. Canning showed us that garlic is a bulb and can be planted to make new garlic!

Mr. Canning showed us a potato, which is a tuber. The "eyes" can be cut apart to make new plants.

Strawberry plants are examples of runners.

An iris can be made with division. You cut apart the root and you can make more irises!

Then we went outside to plant!
Here is what our marigolds will look like:

Here is nasturtium:

Eric Carle Art

Today we created art in the style of Eric Carle. We watched a slideshow earlier this week and we learned that he does his art with collage. We tried the same thing today! We picked an Eric Carle image from one of his books and cut tissue paper, painted on glue, and created a masterpiece!

Check back tomorrow to see the finished bulletin board with all of their art!

Eric Carle

Today we read, Rooster's Off To See The World. We focused on the details of the story. We had to remember the 5 characters of the story and we had to remember what happened at the end of the story. I can tell that our class's comprehension is strengthening! They are able to answer my questions much quicker and with less prompting.

Word Endings

We have noticed more and more that our books have words with different word endings. We are focusing on words with -ing (we are awesome at this one!), -ed, and -s. We learned that -ed makes the word happen in the past. -s makes the word happen now.

We can read all of these words now!

Eric Carle

Today we read, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We watched a slideshow yesterday about how Eric Carle created this book, so it was cool to read it together today. After we read, we worked on retelling the story. We were able to remember the setting, the character, and what happened first, next and last. These are all things your child should be able to do with any fictional story.

We Are Editors!

We attempted something we have never done before: editing each other's writing. We wrote in our journals and then paired up with an editing partner. We had to read our writing to each other, then we helped our partner make it perfect kindergarten writing. We were on the lookout for: a capital letter to start each sentence, punctuation at the end of sentences, spaces in between words, and sight words spelled correctly. I am so impressed with how carefully everyone checked their partners writing! We know what is important in a sentence!

(Seriously! How cute are these pictures?! They took their job so seriously!)

Eric Carle

This week we are doing an author study of Eric Carle. All of his books are wonderful and we are focusing on how he creates his books. We learned that he uses collage in most of his books! We are going to practice this style of art and be artists just like Eric Carle on Thursday!

Today we read, The Tiny Seed. He worked on details while reading this story. We did a comprehension page afterward to show which things were helpful to the seed and which things hurt the seed.

Addition

We are diving deeper into addition with our new math unit. We are working on breaking apart numbers and translating that into equations. We even had to put our equations backwards today to show that we really understand what it means.
