We Filled The Coin Jar!

One of them positive rewards we have in our classroom is coins. We put the coins in a jar and when it is filled, we earn a whole class celebration. Well...we did it! We filled the coin jar today!

We brainstormed a list of choices and then voted on the celebration...

We voted for a character dress up day! On Friday, your child can pick any (school appropriate) book, movie, or book character to dress up as! This is going to be so fun! I already have my book character picked out!

Combinations

We started our new math unit and are beginning addition. We start by making combinations of two different color cubes. It is a visual way to see two numbers coming together. Today we worked on the number 6.

Here we are working in partners to make combinations of 6 cubes.

Then we practiced the skill again by coloring boxes with two colors. See if you can make some combinations of 6 at home tonight!

Special Visitor

Did your kids tell you about the special visitor we found in our classroom yesterday?

While we were at the carpet, we found a cricket on the carpet wanting to learn to read with us! How funny?!

We captured him and observed him for a little bit before releasing him outside. Even insects want to learn with us!

Tip Top Tuesday

What Are We Learning?

This week we are learning five new letters and we have new sight words.

Marty Is Back!

Marty made it back from his first adventure with Melody. Melody shared with us that they baked a cake, went to a birthday party, and went out to eat at Arby's. It sounds like she and Marty had a great weekend!

Naturalist In Residence

We had our very first naturalist lesson today with teacher Janelle. We were learning about soil. We started our lesson in the wetlands where we dug a soil sample with an auger.

Then we got to play with some dirt! We got to see how soil differs at the different layers, feel the differences, and observe it up close with a magnifying glass.

We were such great soil scientists that we earned FBI badges (fungus, bacteria, insects-all things that help the soil)!

Homework Folders

Starting tomorrow, you will see your child's homework folder coming home each night, Monday through Thursday.

This is your child's "homework." Please do not spend more than 15 minutes a night on homework. We want reading and school to be enjoyable and not dreaded.

Homework can take many forms as well. You can choose to read a book together, practice letter names and sounds with the alpha friends chart, read the little paper books that will come home, or any other literacy based activity that you choose, like writing words. The point is to change it up. If your child is tired of practicing sounds, move on to something else.

Please send your child's homework folder back to school every day! It is very important that we have this because we use the books in our reading group.

Awesome Thursday

New Reading Choices

We have a new reading choice now. We have letter stamps that we can play with during our word work station during reading. We were trying to match letters today.

Shapes

In math, we are learning about shapes. Today we focused on squares and rectangles. We are experts on triangles, squares, and rectangles.

Fun Filled Day

Special Visitors

We had some special visitors from the Corvallis Fire Department come visit our classroom today! It is fire safety week so they taught us that fire fighters are not scary. They walked us through all of their gear and now we are not afraid of a fire fighter in full gear.

Wow!

He wore so much gear!

They taught us that if a fire fighter says," is anyone here?" We are supposed to be loud and say, "yes, I'm here!"

Then we got to go out and see a fire truck and all of the cool stuff inside!

Food Adventures

We had our first food adventure lesson this afternoon. We learned about eating a rainbow of foods and then made our own rainbow salsa! It was delicious!

Black Day

Happy black day! Does your child remember the black song?
