Cacti

We have two new members of our classroom! I bought two cacti for our class and we named them this morning. We were so fascinated with cacti that I thought we should have them close by to observe.

Dissecting Lima Beans

To uncover how a seed grows, we needed to know the parts of a seed. We started with a Lima bean that had been soaking overnight to soften. Then we peeled off the seed coat and split our seed in half. We were able to observe the seed food, baby stem and leaves! It was so cool!

Can your child remember the seed parts?

We then compared the seed coat of the Lima beans to the seed coats we found on our sunflower and pumpkin plants. Lastly, we looked at the "coats" of other animals to see if it was similar to our seed coat!

The seed coat protects the seed and we realized that an egg shell does the same thing for a bird egg!

The exoskeleton of these bees were similar too!

Finally, we contemplated the similarities of a snake skin to the seed coat.

Thank you Mrs. Uebel for letting us borrow these!
