Shape Fun!

Who knew learning shapes could be so fun! Our class does! We have been learning our 2D and 3D shapes recently. We have a few different videos that we watch to help us learn the names and the kids absolutely love them! They get up and dance while learning complex shapes.

By the end of the year, we need to know these 2D shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and hexagon (but we have also learned the rhombus and trapezoid). We also need to know these 3D shapes: sphere, cone, cube, cylinder, and pyramid.

Here we are dancing to our video this morning!

Mother's Day Invitation

We are getting closer to our Mother's Day Tea Party and today we created our invitations! Look in your child's backpack tonight and make sure you get yours!

We had some proud kids today who wanted to show off their invitations!

We hope everyone is able to come and enjoy a nice morning with their child! It is going to be a wonderful day!

Water Beads

We started growing our water beads yesterday. They start as super small hard beads, but when they are put in water, they grow and puff up into squishy beads! It is an excellent sensory activity! We all got turns touching them this afternoon!

Amigos!

We do poetry in our classroom every Monday. It is such a great way to build reading skills very early and quickly. Children can pick up rhyming, word families, and so much more. Because poems and songs are easier for kids to remember, they can attach the written words of the poem to the poem they say.

This week we learned the poem, Amigos. It taught us a little Spanish too! Have your child practice the poem for you tonight!

Last Naturalist Session!

We had our last session of Naturalist in Residence with Mrs. Uebel this afternoon. We went on a nature hike to find different things. We were working on our observational skills.

Here we go!

We got a form to track our observations!

We got to see a Chickadee nest!

We saw the pretty white birch grove! We learned that these started from one tree and the roots shoot up to make more trees.

We found a caterpillar!

This is what that caterpillar will turn into.

Thrilling Thursday!

Math

We have begun our story problem unit in math. We are learning to figure out the missing number in an equation in multiple ways. We started simply with problems that were missing their sum (2+3=?). Then we moved onto story problems that were missing an addend (2+?=5, or ?+3=5). Today we took it a step further and did subtraction equations with a missing difference (5-2=?).

We are taking these numbers and are putting them into a number bond and then turning those numbers into a fact family! This helps us really understand the relationships between the numbers from our number bond. Who knew math in kindergarten would get so complex! But your kids are awesome! They say it is, "easy peasy, lemon sqeezy!"

This is one problem we practiced today at calendar. We can take a number, build it, break it down into two parts, put those numbers in a number bond, and make a fact family from it! Wow!

The Day the Crayons Quit

You have probably heard some of the kids talking about this book! We have been working with it to practice digging deeper into a text. After reading the book a few times, we were trying to find evidence to support the questions I was asking. Many kids decided to write about it today!

Happy Earth Day!

What a wondeful Earth Day it has been! We re read, The Lorax, and compared it to what we had learned earlier this week about trees. We know the importance of trees and we know that they give us shade, food, and clean our air!

To honor Earth Day, we created a Lorax holding a Teuffela Tree! Take a look at how we made them!

We started with our cup. We glued on our Lorax's feet, hands, mustache, and eyes. Then we added hair! Ms. Loggins hot glued a nose on him too!

To finish them, we used a Sharpie to add his workers. The last touch was a Truffela Tree. We twisted together pipe cleaners and put feathers as the top! They are adorable!
